Antibiotics have been routinely used for years in livestock production and eliminating their usage means a major shift in flock and herd management. Without antibiotics, the economics of livestock production are under severe assault. Viral diseases, particularly those that are immunosuppressive lead to secondary bacterial infections that were previously treated with antibiotics. In the absence of antibiotics, vaccination to control the initial viral insult is one method that can be used to ensure the health of food animals. LARAD uses proprietary virus-like-particle (VLP) technology to develop vaccines and diagnostics for food animal diseases. VLPs are structurally analogous to viruses but they do not contain any genetic material; they are essentially empty protein shells. They make ideal vaccines because they cannot cause disease yet they still induce a strong immune response. VLPs can also be used as reagents in diagnostic kits that detect an animal's response to a specific viral infection on which the VLP is based.
